Some days it feels like we are trapped by technology. It may seem impossible to balance your work and family life when you are always on call.
On one hand, it's extremely convenient when you desperately need to get a hold of someone, however, it makes leaving life at the office extremely challenging.
The danger with this convenient world is that it's also raised our expectations. We are no longer able to patiently wait for a response, instead we expect immediate action. As a direct result, our clients expect immediate action in return.
So what do we do? How do we ensure that we are satisfying our clients and management team without sacrificing our family's well being?
Separate Work and Family Life:
To be highly effective both at work and at home, you need to learn the art of separation. Finding work life balance will increase your productivity, your emotional health and your general well being.
So how do you do it?
Create a Schedule:
Make an active decision about when your work day starts and ends. This is particularly important if you work from home; as it's difficult to create a division when there isn't a division of space.
Schedules are also easier to maintain if you establish a consistent routine. This will allow both your clients and your family to know when you are working and when you are home.
Once you set your schedule, make sure that you adhere to it. The minute your work day begins, focus only on your work activities.
If you're home this does not mean that you clean your house or make personal phone calls, during your scheduled work period. Only do these activities during your prescheduled breaks, lunches or when the work day is finished.
If you work away from home, leave your home stressors behind. Make it clear to your friends and family, that you have begun your work day and only respond to emergencies. Do not use the work day to complete at home tasks; such as banking, personal email or any other personal business.
If something personal needs to be done, once again schedule this during breaks and lunches.
By scheduling your work and home day, you will find that increase your productivity both at home and at work. You will essentially eliminate unnecessary distractions and complete tasks at a faster pace.
End your Work Day:
When your schedule of your work day ends, it is now the time to focus on yourself and your family. Make a conscious effort to officially end your work day!
This means turning off your work cell phone or blackberry and not responding or checking your work emails during your down time.
Give your family and yourself, the same benefit that you gave your work place and make them a priority during the down time.
At first this will be challenging to do; especially if your clients have become accustomed to immediate responses. However, most clients will respect the importance of the work/life balance and will reap the benefits of a more positive and focused you during the work day.
In addition, ending your work day will do wonders for developing a close bond with your family. Make a conscious effort to have family time. Enjoy a meal with your loved ones, plan a movie or game night, but in general just spend the time to get to know one another.

Work Family Life Balance: Additional Tricks to ending your Work Day:
Change your clothing: getting out of your work clothes is a physical way of separating your work and home life.
Give yourself time to distress. This is your own personal time to reflect on your day, and make the mental shift from work to home life. Distressing could be reading a magazine, going to the gym or taking a warm bubble bath. Whatever you need to assist you in making the mental switch between work and home.
Use your commuting time as an additional tool to aid you in the shift between your work and your family life. Listen to motivational or relaxation tapes to assist you with making this change.
If you work from home, try to create a separate work area. Going to this area will be a physical way of communicating with your family when your work day begins and ends.
By creating a separation between your work and family life, you will find that you will increase your productivity and generally your overall health and well being. Try using some of these simple steps today.
