Natural Childbirth

Is natural childbirth for you?

The birth of a child is an amazingly personal, intimate event. Each mom and baby ultimately end up with their own special birth story. natural-childbirth-preparationAsk a women who has had several children and she'll tell you that every birth was different.

Some women are very clear when planning and anticipating the birth of their child. . .they want pain medications. Others prefer a natural approach to birthing their babies.

While it can be painful, natural birthing is the best option for having a healthy delivery simply because it eliminates the potential negative effects of medications on both mom and her baby.

While most women initially plan on having an unmedicated labor, many tend to change their minds when the pain gets bad. If you desire a natural childbirth, but aren't sure you'll stay the course; it's critical that you prepare in advance for your natural labor.

Natural Labor Tips

The first step for success is setting your intention. That is to say you should make your decision and be confident about it. You've probably heard someone say (or said it yourself) that they're going to "try" to do something. When we say "try" we leave the door open for doubt.

Instead of "trying" to give birth naturally; state that you are "going to go natural." Being confident about your intention is actually a big step in increasing your chances of doing it. Of course, it's imperative that you consult with your health-care professional about your plans. Not everyone is a good candidate for natural childbirth and the successful birth of your child, no matter the method is what's most important.

Natural Childbirth Support

If you are a good candidate, you may want to consider hiring people to help to deliver your baby that are more likely to support your choice to give birth naturally.

Perhaps you might want to find a practice with a certified-nurse- midwife . Midwives are more open to different methods of childbirth and they have expertise in delivery.

Another option is to hire a doula . Doulas are paid, naturalistic child birthing coaches. When you have someone there reminding you of why you made your decision and pushing you to continue, sticking with it can be much easier.

Natural Childbirth Classes

Most people who plan to give birth naturally consider taking a birthing class, such as Lamaze or the Bradley Natural Childbirth Method, also known simply as "The Bradley Method."

These courses teach you how to use focused breathing and other relaxation techniques to manage your pain.

Another popular natural childbirth pain management tool is hypnosis. You can find pregnancy hypnotherapy programs online.

Prior to your delivery, discuss your plan with your healthcare provider and ask them for their support. Once you get into the delivery room, make sure everyone is aware of your wish to have a natural childbirth.

You can remind your health-care providers not to offer you any medicines unless they are medically necessary. This way, you won't have the immediate option of changing your mind once you are in labor and are not in a good state of mind.

Just remember, even if you have the best of intentions, sometimes a natural labor turns out not to be the best option for the safety of you and your baby. And that's fine! As mothers, our goal should be a healthy child. Do what is right for your situation. Good luck to you!
