Decorating the Baby Nursery as a Family

Introducing a new baby to your household can be both a happy and stressful experience for all members of your family. Siblings can be uncertain of what their new lives will be like now that mom and dad's attention has to be shared with someone else.

Books are an excellent tool that can help spark a discussion on what life will be like with a new sibling. This may help alleviate some of your older child's anxiety and give them an outlet to discuss their thoughts and feelings.

However; a fun way of fostering a positive older sibling relationship is to get them involved with decorating the baby nursery. Children will love this responsibility and be so excited to tell everyone they meet what they did for the new baby sister or brother.

Decorating the Baby Nursery:
Tips for Including the Whole Family

Here are some quick and easy ways to involve children in the decorating process:

  • Narrow the paint selection to a few choices and have your older child choose the final baby nursery paint
  • Buy canvases and have them create their own art work to put up in the baby's room
  • Let the older child pick a special gift to give their new sibling and have them select the place to put it in the baby's room
  • Have your child help you make the decision between your two favorite decorating themes
  • Baby bedding is a perfect way to enhance the theme of the nursery. Take your older child shopping to help you find a set of baby bedding that matches the theme.
  • Allow your child to select one of their favorite photographs to hang in the baby's room. Talk to your child about the special role they will have as a big sister or brother.

Once you've jointly decided on how to decorate the nursery for the new baby, involve your child in the actual setup. Children love to help out. Ask your child's opinion on where to place the furniture, art work and decorations and if it makes sense, act on their ideas.

If you have to put any furniture or pieces together, have your child help you out. Young children can participate by holding the large pieces of furniture or handing you the tools. If you have older children, get them involved by having them help assemble the pieces. They'll enjoy it and that's less work for you!

Remember children are naturally creative and have some fantastic, innovative ideas. Incorporating this creativity when decorating the baby nursery in a unique way to have fun with your children. Instead of it being a lot of work on your plate, make it a wonderful, positive family experience.
