Breastfeeding Tips

New to breastfeeding?

Here are some great breastfeeding tips so that you can become comfortable feeding your child no matter where you are.

Breastfeeding at home can be one of the most natural, relaxing experiences you'll have with your baby, but have you tried it while watching your 7-year old's soccer game?

It can be a little intimidating.

The fact is life today moves at a hectic pace. As a mom to a young baby, you may still have to work, carpool your other children, shop and run a thousand other errands so it can be tricky to find privacy when it's time to feed you baby.

Unfortunately our society can sometimes make women feel uncomfortable about breastfeeding in public areas, but don't let this stop you.

Breastfeeding has many wonderful benefits. Practice and discretion are keys that can aid you in living a full, active life while you are breastfeeding your baby.

You should know that you have every right to breast feed in public. In fact, many areas have laws protecting breastfeeding mothers.

WWW.llli.org is a great resource to find out more about breastfeeding laws in your state.

The best way to avoid uncomfortable situations; however, is to take steps to respect the wishes of others and be discrete. Since many places do not have designated areas for breastfeeding mothers to feed, you may have to be creative.

Breastfeeding Tips for Stress-free Feedings:

Dress for Success

Wear clothes specifically designed for breast feeding. You can purchase breastfeeding bras, t-shirts, tops, dress, etc. that are especially made to help make the process easier.

Cover Up

While many women use a baby blanket, you can be even more discrete by wearing a jacket along with a breastfeeding top or try using a large shawl to cover your baby. Just be sure that you drape baby comfortably so he or she has enough air and doesn't get too hot underneath the cover.

Practice Makes Perfect

While that may sound a little strange, practicing is the best way to develop your ease and discretion. Try feeding your child in front of a mirror while at home. Experiment with different positions and different coverings. This will help you learn which positions are the best for you and your baby while in public.

Find the Right Spot for Nursing.

Here are some breastfeeding tips for scouting a good location. If you are out shopping for clothes, a spare dressing room works great. When dining in a restaurant, try asking to be seated in a corner or near a wall where you can face away from the main floor. If your table is not in a suitable location, you can always take a quick trip to your car if you have one. In other locations you may visit, don't hesitate to ask the employees or staff to help you find a spot.

While it's normal to want to be respectful of other people, remember that as a breastfeeding mother, you do have your own rights so don't feel pressured to feed your baby in a bathroom stall which are often dirty and uncomfortable for feeding. Not to mention they don't smell that great.

Finding a better, cleaner environment for you and baby will go a long way toward making the experience more enjoyable for both of you.

Have confidence Moms!

Don't be intimidated by unsupportive people, be they family or strangers. No matter how many steps you take to do what's right, there may be someone who is offended by breastfeeding. Don't back down. Just focus on the many wonderful benefits and know that you are doing what is best for you and your baby.

So put these breastfeeding tips to good use and enjoy this precious time. Before you know it, your baby will be growing and on to the next stage of life.
