Is Babywearing Right for You?

Babywearing is the practice of wearing your baby in an infant sling or baby carrier.

Since babies tend to need a lot of affection and care, babywearing is a great way for caregivers and babies to be together. In addition to bonding, the largest benefit to the babywearer is the ability to have both hands free. Doing the laundry, fixing lunch, and shopping all can be done while wearing your baby.

In the past, backpack carriers were frequently used, but today's infant slings come in variety of forms and offer several different positions to carry your baby.

To determine which type of infant baby carrier or sling would work best for you, assess your physical strength and determine how you want to carry your baby. Then, begin your research to find a baby sling that matches your needs.

Babywearing Benefits to Baby

  • Studies have shown that babies are calmer when worn in a sling. Since the caregivers are literally right with the baby, they are able to respond immediately to meet babies' needs.
  • Babies are more entertained as they are "close to the action" and able to study facial expressions and interactions.
  • Babies' brains are stimulated and neural development is promoted by the constant stimuli.
  • Babies' biorhythms develop faster as they are able to feel their parent's heart beat and body functions.
  • Many believe that babies who are worn by their moms are able to form a stronger bond since they feel very safe and comfortable near her.

Babywearing Benefits to Mom and Other Caregivers

  • Moms are able to breastfeed baby as needed without having to use both hands.
  • The physical contact increases a mother's progesterone levels which in turn lead to a more intimate bond, easier breastfeeding and may decrease chances of postpartum depression.
  • The convenience allows the caregiver to be with baby while doing other things.
  • Babywearers don't have to lug around heavy strollers or car seats when out and about.
  • Babywearing can provide a good weight-bearing workout.
  • Caregivers are able to learn their babies' normal cues and anticipate their needs.

Safety

While infant slings and baby carriers are considered safe for you and your child, there are some important safety tips to consider.
  • It is imperative that you follow the manufacturers' suggestions closely to ensure that your baby is seated correctly to ensure safety and a proper body position for your baby.
  • Be sure to select an infant baby carrier that is appropriate for the age and weight of your child.
  • Be sure to change positions frequently if carrying baby on one side to prevent back and hip problems.
  • Be aware of where your baby's head is in order to allow proper space for passage through small passageways.
  • Of course, when driving you should not have your child in a baby sling but safely in an appropriate car seat.

Choosing to use an infant sling or baby carrier is a wonderful choice for you and your baby. If done safely and properly, you'll find it's a great way to bond with your child while still meeting the demands of your daily life.
