Have You Thought About Your Baby's Skincare?
As the parent of an infant, you do your best to make sure your baby is cared for with love. As you attend to your baby's needs each day, your baby's skin may not be on your mind much. With the excepton of the occasional
diaper rash
, perhaps your baby's skin appears to be healthy. But consider this--according to a study recently published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers at the University of Washington found that the use of baby skin care products such as powder, lotions and shampoo on infants significantly increased the levels of phthalates found in their urine.
Why Parents Should Be Concerned About Baby Skin Care
- Animal studies have indicated that phthalate exposure can cause birth defects, infertility and in the case of males, deformities in the reproductive tract.
- Human studies have indicated phthalates may adversely affect male reproductive function.
- Baby's are still developing and much more vulnerable than adults to exposure to toxins.
Researchers, therefore, recommend that parents who want to decrease their infant's exposure to phthalates limit the amount of skin care products used. However, parents should be personally warned as well. According to a report published by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), phthalates are common in many personal care products used by the entire family.
In 2002, EWG, along with a coalition of environmental and public health organizations, contracted with a major national laboratory to test 72 name-brand beauty products for the presence of phthalates.
The Results?
52 of the 72 products were found to contain phthalates in levels ranging from trace to nearly three percent of the product's ingredients. Far scarier is the fact that none of the products disclosed phthalates on their labels. Amazingly, it is completely legal for U.S manufacturers to use phthalates in personal care products and, they are not required to disclose it on the ingredients list.
